Chapter Fifteen

After a horrible night of not sleeping, Emma was overwhelmed. She had nightmares of Leslie, was worried about Jake and Stephanie, and feared she’d never find the answers they needed to end this.

She was grateful that they were making some progress. They were figuring out plans. So, she was inspired to keep searching for answers, to continue this quest.

But it was exhausting as well. Facing her fears, going against a gang that had already killed so many people, and restarting this journey she thought she had left behind was terrifying.

It brought back so many old memories, some pleasant and others less so.

She struggled to figure out how to cope with it all. She wrestled with guilt, fear, and a sense of hopelessness that kept fighting to take over.

She was able to fight the feeling back some when she was with other people, especially those who were determined to help her through this. They made her feel stronger and more capable.

Like this was solvable and they would figure out a way to bring an end to everything.

Once she was alone, it was more difficult. As she went about her morning, working through the information Leslie had given her, she was swamped with a tidal wave of emotions that pulled her under its deadly grasp.

She got caught up in the flurry. Just as she was going to take a break for lunch, she broke.

Emma curled up with Kendrick’s grey, knit sweater that still smelled of his Dior cologne, pulled out the journal, held a worn photo of him smiling at her behind the camera, and wept as memories of Kendrick swept her away.

She missed every little thing about him, and she wished with her whole heart that she could have him back. She knew that if only she could get him back, maybe life would make sense again.

“I love you,” she whispered. “I love you so much. I just don’t understand why you weren’t honest with me. Why did you leave me with this mess?”

She allowed herself to cry until all the tears dried up, for now at least. Then, she opened the journal to a random page. She held it a little closer to her as she realized it was another one of the memories Kendrick recorded about their day at the lake.

She traced over his words with her finger, trying to see the memory through his eyes as if she could lift the images up from the ink. He was always a better writer than she was, so the things he wrote about danced in her mind clearly.

She looked stunning under the colors of the sunset splashing across her white dress, her hair falling lightly over her shoulders. Her laugh is the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard, and she shares it so frequently. This woman is an earth angel who is passionately in love with life. That laugh captures my heart every time I hear it. Inspires me to never let her go.

Emma truly is the love of my life.
